Russia Says No Weapons On Plane For Syria Stopped By Turkey

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has said there were “no weapons” aboard a Syrian passenger airliner that left Moscow bound for Damascus on October 10 and was forced by Turkish warplanes to land in Ankara.

Lavrov says cargo on the plane, which he described as “electronic equipment for radars,” came from a “legal Russian supplier being sent in a legal way to a legal customer.”

Lavrov conceded some of the cargo was “dual purpose” and could have civilian and military uses.

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on October 11 that the plane had ammunition and military equipment for the Syrian Defense Ministry.

Syria has also denied there were any weapons on the plane and demanded all material seized in Ankara be returned.

White House Says It Stopped Cyber Attack

The White House says it has foiled an attempt to infiltrate its computer system.

White House spokesman Jay Carney said the attack had been identified and isolated.  He said there was no indication that any data had been removed.

Carney described the attack as “spear-phishing” and said such efforts against government computer systems are “not infrequent.”

“Phishing” is a tactic that involves sending an e-mail that falsely claims to be from a legitimate enterprise in an attempt to trick the user into turning over information.

Last year, Google blamed computer hackers in China for a phishing effort against Gmail accounts of several hundred people, including senior U.S. government officials and military personnel.

Pussy Riot Trial Stopped After Bomb Threat

The trial of the three members of the Pussy Riot feminist punk group has been suspended and the building of Moscow’s Khamovnichesky court evacuated after a bomb threat phone call.

It was immediately unclear whether the threat was a hoax.

This is the third time when the trial has been suspended since it started on July 30.

On August 1, the trial was suspended twice after the defendants felt unwell and ambulances were called to the courtroom.

Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, Maria Alyokhina, and Yekaterina Samutsevich were arrested in March after staging a performance at Moscow’s Christ the Savior Cathedral in which they denounced President Vladimir Putin’s rule.

They were officially charged with hooliganism and insulting the feelings of Orthodox Christians.

They face seven years in prison if convicted.

Two Of Three Respondents In Iran State TV Poll Want Nuclear Enrichment Stopped

More than 60 percent of the respondents in an opinion poll posted on the website of Iran’s state television news channel on July 3 said they were in favor of Iran stopping its uranium-enrichment program in return for the gradual removal of international sanctions.

The poll has been since removed and replaced by another poll about soccer, apparently after the results became apparent and received attention on social media.

The poll looked like this, posing a single question and offering three choices:

What method do you prefer for facing the unilateral Western sanctions against Iran?
1. Giving up uranium enrichment in return of the gradual removal of sanctions
2. Retaliatory measure by closing the Strait of Hormuz
3. Resistance against the unilateral sanctions for preserving nuclear rights

The majority of respondents — 63 percent, by early evening, when the accompanying image was made — had chosen the first option. Meanwhile, 20 percent had voted in favor of the closure of the Strait of Hormuz and 18 percent had chosen the third option.

It is unclear how many people took part in the poll on irinn.ir, which is one of Iran’s major news sites. The results appeared to contradict official claims that virtually all Iranians support the country’s nuclear ambitions despite unprecedented pressure over its nuclear activities.

Today, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast said a plan by Iran’s parliament that calls for an effort to shut down the Strait of Hormuz in reaction to European Union’s recently enacted oil embargo reflects Iranian public opinion.

Mehmanparast was quoted by ISNA news agency as saying that the actions of the lawmakers “demonstrate the mentality of our people and reflect their opinions and views about the hostile measures against our country.”

Iranians are a proud nation, and indeed many people support the country’s nuclear program — cited by some as a symbol of national pride. But there are also those who think the price has been too high and that Iran should compromise over its nuclear program. Their views, however, are being seemingly ignored by state officials.

The rising pressure and new sanctions that are making life increasingly difficult for ordinary Iranians could lead to more citizens questioning the cost of the country’s sensitive nuclear activities.

As one 30-year-old man in Tehran told me: “We should have a nuclear program — scientific progress is definitely important — but many are asking what is it good for when we don’t have food on our tables?”

* Large banking companies in the UAE stopped dealing in Iranian rial

Officials in the big banking companies in the United Arab Emirates that their company stopped trading in Iranian rial during the last few weeks of reducing Iran’s ability to trade and access to foreign exchange.

Has been since late last year freeze on Iran’s trade heavily in the global banking system under the U.S. sanctions targeting Tehran’s nuclear program controversial, and used the Washington law against money laundering to make the risks are high for banks around the world to carry out activities with Iran, including trade finance.

Continued Iranian businessmen some business transactions with Dubai and other parts, although through the transfer of funds through the exchange companies that are independent of the banking system, according to what the traders, with most companies now ceased to conduct banking transactions, the Iranian Rial.

Iran faces international sanctions restricting purchases of weapons, after they started years ago, an extensive program of arms and the development of its nuclear capabilities.

Netanyahu: Nuclear-armed Iran must be stopped

Binyamin Netanyahu, Israel’s prime minister, has stated his country’s right to defend itself against the possible threat of a nuclear-armed Iran and said the world cannot wait much longer to take action against Tehran.

“We’ve waited for diplomacy to work, we’ve waited for sanctions to work [against Iran]; none of us can afford to wait much longer

- Binyamin Netanyahu, Israeli PM

Netanyahu was addressing the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), the powerful pro-Israel lobbying group, in Washington on Monday, after earlier holding talks with US President Barack Obama.

“Israel will always reserve the right to defend itself,” Netanyahu said in an uncompromising speech.

“We are determined to prevent Iran developing nuclear weapons. We leave all options on the table and containment is not an option. The Jewish state will not allow those who seek Israel’s destruction the means to achieve that goal. A nuclear-armed Iran must be stopped.”

In an apparent retort to Obama’s address to AIPAC a day earlier in which the US president called on Israel to allow time for US-led sanctions against Iran to take effect, Netanyahu said: ”We’ve waited for diplomacy to work, we’ve waited for sanctions to work; none of us can afford to wait much longer.”

Netanyahu’s visit to Washington comes amid speculation, in the press and in public statements by Israeli officials, that Israel is planning a strike against nuclear facilities in Iran which it says aims to develop a nuclear device.

Netanyahu told AIPAC that he would not talk about what Israel would or would not do, but reiterated that Israel would not allow Iran to acquire nuclear weapons.

“As prime minister of Israel, I will never let my people live in the shadow of annihilation,” he said.

The Obama administration has not said whether it would support Israeli action against Iran, and in recent weeks has said it sees no evidence that Iran is building a nuclear weapon.

James Clapper, the US director of national intelligence, testified before Congress in January that he believed Iran had not yet decided whether or not to build a bomb.

Diplomacy

In a statement issued prior to talks with Netanyahu, Obama largely echoed points he made on Sunday night in his address to AIPAC.

Obama said the US “reserved all options” regarding Iran’s nuclear programme, but wanted more time to pursue diplomacy.

“I know that both the prime minister and I prefer to resolve this diplomatically,” he said. “We understand the costs of military action.”

Iran expert Trita Parsi discusses US-Israel relations

Al Jazeera’s Patty Culhane, reporting from the AIPAC conference, called Netanyahu’s address “an impassioned speech”.

“It seemed at times he was actually mocking members of the Obama administration, saying that amazingly some people still don’t believe Iran is trying to develop a nuclear weapon.

“It’s important to point out that the US intelligence agencies have repeatedly said that there is absolutely no evidence that Iran has decided that it wants to build a nuclear weapon,” Culhane added.

Reporting from the Iranian capital Tehran, Al Jazeera’s Dorsa Jabbari said: “[Iran's] position will not change based on this speech. Israel has always been public enemy number one in this country and this kind of rhetoric about Iran only serves this establishment’s purpose.

“[Iran] believes this kind of talk will only strengthen their position and actually win over more people in the country in terms of aligning them together in standing united against one enemy.

“And this is the point President Obama made on Sunday as well - that there has been too much talk of war and it only serves the Iranian establishment when that happens,” Jabbari said.

Stalled negotiations

International negotiations over Iran’s nuclear programme have been stalled for more than a year, but the Iranian government announced last month that it would be willing to resume talks without any preconditions.

Israeli officials want Iran to completely suspend its uranium enrichment programme before the West resumes negotiations. However, the White House has apparently rejected that demand, which Iran would almost certainly refuse.

AIPAC’s annual conference holds particular importance in an election year in the US, with the group’s members expected to fan out across Capitol Hill to pressure legislators in the lead-up to November’s vote.

Iran’s nuclear programme has also become a key foreign policy issue in the US, where all of the Republican presidential candidates have been sharply critical of Obama’s approach to Tehran.

Mitt Romney, the former Massachusetts governor and frontrunner in the Republican primary race, told an audience shortly after Obama’s speech that “if Barack Obama is re-elected, Iran will have a nuclear weapon”.

Three of the Republican candidates - Romney, Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum - are scheduled to address the AIPAC conference on Tuesday.
