Belgian Post Complains Over Spin On Aliyev Vanity Stamp

BRUSSELS — Belgium’s postal service has complained to Azerbaijan’s embassy after reports in the Azerbaijani media suggested the company had issued an official stamp to commemorate the 90th anniversary of the birth of late President Heydar Aliyev.

The 0.90 euro ($ 1.17) stamp was launched earlier this month in a step that Azerbaijan’s ambassador to Belgium, Fuad Isgandarov, said would “help immortalize Heydar Aliyev on the European level.”

Aliyev is the father of current Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, who succeeded him shortly before his death in 2003.

An English-language report in the Azerbaijan State Telegraph Agency (AzerTAc) on May 12 carried the headline “Belgian post office launches stamp to mark 90th anniversary of Azerbaijani national leader Heydar Aliyev.”

But a representative of Belgium’s postal service (bpost) told RFE/RL the stamp is not an official bpost stamp.

Instead, he said it was issued under a service the company offers called “My Stamp,” which allows customers to commission personalized stamps for a specific event, such as a wedding or birthday.

The feature — similar to schemes in the United States, Britain, and elsewhere — usually entails people sending in pictures of themselves or relatives, which bpost then makes into a limited number of stamps to be used for private purposes.

The tool has become popular in Belgium, with hundreds of thousands of requests sent in every year since the service was introduced about a decade ago.

The representative, who declined to be named, said bpost has contacted the Azerbaijani Embassy in Belgium to complain that the Aliyev stamp has been presented as an official stamp. He underlined that a person who orders a personalized stamp via bpost has exclusive responsibility for it.

He said someone had sent in a picture of Aliyev, which later was issued.

The Azerbaijani Embassy as well as the country’s NATO mission in Brussels and various Azerbaijani diaspora organizations held a ceremony to celebrate the issuing of the stamp of the controversial leader earlier in May.

The elder Aliyev, who ruled Soviet and then an independent Azerbaijan for decades, was born on May 10, 1923.

The bpost representative also noted that the company vets images proposed for “My Stamp” to weed out those that “go against public order” — for example, by showing nudity or well-known tyrants such as Adolf Hitler or Soviet dictator Josef Stalin.

He said the company would continue to make as many background checks as possible in the future.

Majority state-owned bpost is the main company responsible for the delivery of national and international mail in Belgium and by far the biggest issuer of stamps in the country.

Hackers Post Bogus Report On Obama

Hackers have broken into the Twitter account of the Associated Press (AP) news agency, posting a false report about explosions at the White House injuring President Barack Obama.

Within a few minutes, AP announced that its Twitter feed had been hacked, and the U.S. agency immediately suspended the account.

It said it was working to correct the issue.

White House spokesman Jay Carney told reporters in Washington on April 23 that the president was “fine.”

The stock market briefly dropped after the false tweet was posted.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell more than 150 points, before recovering in a few minutes.

A shadowy group calling itself the Syrian Electronic Army claimed responsibility for hacking the AP Twitter account.

The cyberattack is the latest in a string of hacking operations targeting international media organizations.

Washington Post Breaks Lockstep on Israel and Iran

It becomes more and more difficult to pretend that Israel doesn’t have a nuclear-weapons program and that Iran does.

LockstepThe United States seems to devote less energy to developing a constructive solution to what’s been called the Iran nuclear standoff than it does to convincing Israel it will attack Iran if push (however imagined) comes to shove. At the New York Times, David Sanger and Eric Schmitt wrote on Monday (Sept. 3):

“One other proposal circulating in Washington, advocated by some former senior national security officials, is a ‘clandestine’ military strike, akin to the one Israel launched against Syria’s nuclear reactor in 2007. It took weeks for it to become clear that site had been hit by Israeli jets, and perhaps because the strike was never officially acknowledged by Israel, and because its success was so embarrassing to Syria, there was no retaliation.”

Yeah, as if Iran, unlike Syria, won’t officially acknowledge an attack by Israel and be too embarrassed to retaliate. That’s wishful thinking a la the Neocon mind. More important, it’s sad day when a major power such as the United States is reduced to appeasing — yes, appeasing — a smaller state such as Israel. Especially when Israel is not only dependent on it for defense aid, but for assistance in the event it attacks Iran. Of course, Israeli supporters’ disproportionate influence on American elected officials precludes the United States informing Israel it will be left to hang out and dry if it attacks Iran. Or, in a sane world, should that come to pass, that the United States will sharply reduce its defense aid to Israel.

The United States though continues to overlook the sophistry of not only Israel’s, but its own policy, toward Iran. International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) inspectors are present in Iran every day of the years and sometimes show up for inspections with only two-hours notice. Israel, on the other hand, has never publicly acknowledged its nuclear-weapons program. In other words, it never signed the nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty, as Iran did, and thus isn’t subject to inspections.

The unstated assumption on the West’s part is that Israel doesn’t pose a nuclear threat because it’s “rational.” But what demonstrates irrationality more than threatening to attack Iran, a state with an accredited nuclear-energy program replete with invasive inspections?

I’m usually loath to praise the Washington Post, which has drifted rightward since the Woodward and Bernstein years when conservatives famously called it “Pravda on the Potomac.” But on August 31, its ombudsman, Patrick Pexton, actually dared to invoke the specter of Israel’s nuclear-weapons program in a piece titled What about Israel’s nuclear weapons?

Readers periodically ask me some variation on this question: “Why does the press follow every jot and tittle of Iran’s nuclear program, but we never see any stories about Israel’s nuclear weapons capability?”

It’s a fair question. Going back 10 years into Post archives, I could not find any in-depth reporting on Israeli nuclear capabilities, although national security writer Walter Pincus has touched on it many times in his articles and columns.

He reminds us of Israel’s preposterous

… official position, as reiterated by Aaron Sagui, spokesman for the Israeli Embassy here, is that “Israel will not be the first country to introduce nuclear weapons into the Middle East. Israel supports a Middle East free of all weapons of mass destruction following the attainment of peace.”

After reviewing reasons why Israel’s nuclear-weapons program isn’t reported, Pexton writes (emphasis added):

I don’t think many people fault Israel for having nuclear weapons. If I were a child of the Holocaust, I, too, would want such a deterrent to annihilation. But that doesn’t mean the media shouldn’t write about how Israel’s doomsday weapons affect the Middle East equation. Just because a story is hard to do doesn’t mean The Post, and the U.S. press more generally, shouldn’t do it.

Despite the presumptuousness of what’s italicized, Pexton acquitted himself admirably. The second time in a week, in fact, on the subject of Iran and Israel that the Washington Post did so. Nuclear activist Alice Slater wrote about the 2012 session of The Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), which is now under the chairmanship of Iran.

Significantly, an Associated Press story in the Washington Post headlined, “Iran opens nonaligned summit with calls for nuclear arms ban”, reported that “Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi opened the gathering by noting commitment to a previous goal from the nonaligned group. … ‘We believe that the timetable for ultimate removal of nuclear weapons by 2025, which was proposed by NAM, will only be realized if we follow it up decisively,’ he told delegates.”

By contrast (emphasis added)

… the New York Times, which has been beating the drums for war with Iran, just as it played a disgraceful role in the deceptive reporting during the lead-up to the Iraq War, never mentioned Iran’s proposal for nuclear abolition. The Times carried the bland headline on its front page, At Summit Meeting, Iran Has a Message for the World”, and then went on to state, “the message is clear. As Iran plays host to the biggest international conference …it wants to tell its side of the long standoff with the Western powers which are increasingly convinced that Tehran is pursuing nuclear weapons”, without ever reporting Iran’s offer to support the NAM proposal for the abolition of nuclear weapons by 2025.

Note the condescending tone of what’s italicized. This is consistent with Times reporting on Iran’s nuclear-energy program in general — as if anybody with any sense knows that Iran seeks to develop nuclear weapons, that Israel’s desire to attack Iran is justified if a little overzealous, and that, again, Israel, unlike Iran, is too rational to ever use its nuclear weapons for anything more than deterrence. (Though, of course, in February, New York Times public editor Arthur Brisbane wrote about a Times article that stated: “the IAEA moved much closer with this report toward stating absolutely that Iran is pursuing a nuclear bomb. Yet the fact that the agency has stopped short of such a finding remains significant. Readers complaining about the Jan. 5 article believe The Times should avoid closing the gap with a shorthand phrase that says the IAEA thinks Iran’s program ‘has a military objective.’ I think the readers are correct on this.” Pexton, too, expressed similar sentiments in the Washington Post in December of 2011.)

Maybe — facetiousness alert! — the United States should call Israel’s bluff: we’ll bomb Iran for you if you make your nuclear-weapons program public, sign the NPT, and open your program to IAEA inspections.

* US employers post the most jobs in 4 years

WASHINGTON – U.S. employers posted the most job openings in four years in June, a positive sign that hiring may pick up.

The Labor Department said Tuesday job openings rose to a seasonally adjusted 3.8 million in June, up from 3.7 million in May. That’s the most since July 2008. Layoffs also fell.

The data follow Friday’s report that said employers in July added the most jobs in five months. A rise in openings could signal better hiring in the coming months. It typically takes one to three months to fill a job.

Even with the increase, hiring is competitive. There were 12.7 million unemployed people in June, or an average of 3.4 unemployed people for each job.

That’s down a bit from May and much lower than the nearly 7-to-1 ratio in July 2009, just after the recession ended. In a healthy job market, the ratio is usually around 2 to 1.

Still, employers have been slow to fill jobs. Since the recession ended in 2009, openings have increased 57 percent. Overall hiring is up only 19 percent.

And openings are still below pre-recession levels of about 5 million per month.

Employers added 163,000 jobs in July, the department said last week. That followed three months of weak hiring and eased concerns that the economy was stalling.

Yet the economy has generated an average of 150,000 jobs per month this year, about the same pace as 2011. That’s not enough to rapidly drive down the unemployment rate, which ticked up to 8.3 percent in July from 8.2 percent in June.

In June, manufacturing, education and health care, and hotels and restaurants all posted more openings. Retailers and state, local and federal government agencies cut available jobs.

The government’s monthly employment report, released last Friday, measures net hiring.

Tuesday’s report, known as the Job Openings and Labor Turnover survey, measures gross hiring. That fell in June from May to 4.36 million. But May’s total was the highest in three and a half years.

When layoffs, quits and other separations are subtracted, the net gain is close to the 64,000 net job gains in June.

Layoffs dropped to 1.8 million in June, down from nearly 2 million in May.

Fewer layoffs make it easier for the economy to generate net job gains. As layoffs decline, fewer gross hires are needed to produce a net gain in jobs.

Kurdish rebels storm Turkey border post

At least 19 people have been killed in southeastern Turkey after a battle between soldiers and members of a Kurdish separatist group, the local provincial governor has said.

Six soldiers, two government-paid village guards and 11 Kurdish rebels were killed in the fighting near the village of Gecimili in Hakkari province, Governor Orhan Alimoglu said on Sunday.

The incident occurred near the Iraqi border early on Sunday, he said, adding that 15 soldiers had also been wounded.

Local media reported that the rebels fired on the army outpost in Hakkari with rocket launchers just after midnight.

The military sent in reinforcement following the raid, using attack helicopters to fire on the rebels’ escape routes, state-run TRT television reported.

The raid on the army post follows similar assaults in the Kurdish-dominated southeast that have prompted the army to launch an all-out offensive against Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) bases in the area.

The Turkish ground-and-air operation, one of the biggest in years, was launched about two weeks ago to drive out the rebels in the town of Semdinli, also in Hakkari province.

About 2,000 soldiers are involved in the offensive, private NTV television reported on Sunday.

“A serious and strong operation is under way in Semdinli,” Besir Atalay, the Turkish deputy prime minister, said last week.

Fighting between the Turkish state and the PKK has claimed tens of thousands of lives since 1984, when the group first took up arms.

AL JAZEERA ENGLISH (AJE)

Huffington Post, MSM Facilitate Destruction of Egypt’s Pyramids

Because my article “Calls to Destroy Egypt’s Great Pyramids Begin” went viral on the Internet–read nearly 400,000 times on FrontPage Magazine alone where it first appeared–as expected, the infamous “hoax” charge has been made to lull the West back to sleep.

According to Daily News Egypt’s “Another hoax: cleric calls on President Morsy to destroy Giza Pyramids,” the calls from the Bahraini cleric I cited “urging President Mohamed Morsy to destroy the Giza Pyramids were issued from a parody Twitter account online, the Daily News Egypt has learned.”

That’s all–that’s the “proof” that this story is a “hoax”: Daily News Egypt (DNE) “has learned” that someone was “impersonating” the Bahraini cleric, whom I quoted. Unlike my article, DNE offers no evidence, no links, no proof to back its story: “Just believe us–you’ll feel better,” seems to be the message.

Some questions: If, as DNE suggests, this was a hoax to scare people over the rising influence of Egypt’s Islamists, why did the hoax perpetrators choose a cleric from Bahrain, a small, foreign nation–why not parody an Egyptian cleric, which obviously would’ve made for a much more effective “hoax”?

More importantly, why does DNE not address the other sources I had cited–including Egypt’s very own Salafi party, which is on record calling for the elimination of Egypt’s pyramids? Even Elaph, “one of the most influential websites in the Arab world,” documents that both the Bahraini cleric and Egypt’s Salafis are calling for the Pyramids’ destruction.

Needless to say, DNE’s hoax charge was quickly disseminated by others, who added their own “logic.” For example, after quoting DNE as evidence, one Kate Durham, writing in Egypt Today focuses on portraying me as having an “agenda” (which, of course, I do: safeguarding the Pyramids).

Likewise, after quoting the DNE report, RT’s “Holy hoax: Radical Islamists call on Egypt to destroy pyramids” offered a revisionist history that truly resembles a “hoax,” arguing that “demolishing the pyramids was prohibited during the 7th century–so the structures remained untouched.”

Really? This almost suggests that the Arabian marauders, who invaded Egypt in the 7th century, pillaging and destroying, were “respectful” of the “cultural significance” of the Pyramids–perhaps designating them as “tourist attractions”? What about 8th century Caliph Ma’mun, who–as this comprehensive English-language fatwa dedicated to explaining the Islamic obligation of destroying pagan monuments, including the Pyramids, puts it–”wanted to destroy the Pyramids in Egypt and he gathered workers but he could not do it”?

What about 12th century Bin Yusif, Saladin’s son and ruler of Egypt? He attempted to destroy the Pyramids, and had an army of laborers work day and night to dismantle Menkaure’s Pyramid, only to quit after eight months, realizing the futility of the task, though his vandals did manage to leave a large vertical gash in the Pyramid’s north face (see here). What about Egypt’s Mamlukes who, with the advent of gun powder, used the “pagan” Sphinx for target practice, effacing its nose?

After citing the DNE report, Huffington Post’s Llewelyn Morgan offers his assurances: “Let’s be crystal-clear about this right here. The answer to the question in my title ["Are the Pyramids Next?"] is a mile-high, neon ‘NO’. The pyramids of Giza are under no threat whatsoever, and neither is any of the rest of Egypt’s glorious archaeological record.”

He then portrays me as “scaremongering” and “offer[ing] a deeply misleading account of what has been happening in Timbuktu,” because I had written, “Currently, in what the International Criminal Court is describing as a possible ‘war crime,’ Islamic fanatics are destroying the ancient heritage of the city of Timbuktu in Mali–all to Islam’s triumphant war cry, ‘Allahu Akbar!’” Morgan explains:

To read that that you’d think that the only Muslims involved in events at Timbuktu were the ones doing the vandalism. But of course it was Islamic buildings that they were attacking. Ansar al-Din, the al-Qaeda-affiliated zealots in northern Mali, consider the traditional Sufi practices of Timbuktu to be heretical.

This is strange logic, indeed. Because the Salafis of Mali consider Sufi buildings insufficiently Islamic–as all Salafis, Wahhabis, and “radicals” do–according to Morgan, that is proof positive that the Pyramids, which are purely pagan, are “under no threat whatsoever” from Egypt’s Salafis.

If Morgan’s point is that, by destroying Sufi Muslim shrines, the “al-Qaeda-affiliated zealots” are not practicing “true Islam”–that’s still neither here nor there. All Salafis–whether in Mali or in Egypt, whether “al-Qaeda affiliated” or not–reject Sufism as a heresy and pagan Pyramids as worse; and in Egypt, the Salafis are now out of the prisons and sitting in Parliament.

All of these apologists are unaware that the Koran portrays pre-Islamic Egypt’s Pharaoh as the quintessential infidel, with the result that the Pyramids, the handiwork of Pharaoh, have always been seen by the pious as an affront to the total victory of Islam in Egypt–hence why any number of Muslim leaders through the centuries tried to lay low those defiant symbols of Egypt’s pre-Islamic past; hence why such calls are again become vocal.

Indeed, here’s the latest bit of evidence: just published in El-Balad, on July 17, “Egypt’s Justice and Development for Human Rights warned against the ongoing incitements from a large number of men of the Islamic religion to destroy the Pyramids and other Pharaonic antiquities, deeming them pagan symbols of pre-Islamic Egypt…. these calls have greatly increased after the victory of the Muslim Brotherhood candidate, Dr. Muhammad Morsi.”

These calls are not a joke–nor a “hoax”: the same mentality that sought to destroy the Pyramids in the past, is the same mentality that is gaining mastery over Egypt in the present–with the exception that, if destroying the Pyramids was an impossible task then, it is realizable now, a wonderful feather in the turban of any aspiring “champion of Islam”–a feat that none of the greatest caliphs and sultans could accomplish, try as they might.

Accordingly, those who understand that the Great Pyramids belong to all mankind, not just Egyptians–and I say this as a Copt, the closest living descendants of Pharaonic Egypt–must safeguard their preservation, and not abandon them to Islamic zealots.

Still, the “leftist” mentality remains oblivious, as if to say, so what if Islamic doctrine and history is replete with the destruction of pre-Islamic monuments from one end of the Islamic world to the other, including several attempts against the Pyramids? So what if, at this very moment, Muslim fanatics are destroying artifacts in the name of Islam? So what if Egypt’s Salafis are on record calling for the destruction of the Pyramids? Not to worry, the Huffington Post et al. say it’s just a “hoax.” Nothing to see here, folks; go right back to sleep.

Incidentally, these media outlets and their writers are the same ones who, when the day comes and the Pyramids are attacked–just like when the Twin Towers were attacked on 9/11–will wring their hands and shake their heads, wondering, “Who knew?” “How?” “Why?” Then, because they still cannot comprehend Islam’s teachings and history, they will, as ever, cite “grievance” or “poverty” or “political oppression” as the real reasons behind this latest atrocity, calling for more Western engagement and head-sticking in the sand. And so the vicious cycle of Islamic intolerance followed by Western appeasement will continue, ad nauseam.

Zardari Nominates Party Stalwart For Pakistani PM Post

Reports from Pakistan say President Asif Ali Zardari has nominated Makhdoom Shahabuddin, a veteran loyalist of the ruling party and current textiles minister, to be Pakistan’s next prime minister.

The pick follows the Supreme Court’s ouster of Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani in connection with a possible criminal investigation targeting Zardari.

Shahabuddin is a stalwart of the ruling Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP).

The National Assembly, the lower house of parliament, where the Peoples Party has a majority, is expected to meet in a special session on June 22 to vote Shahabuddin into the prime minister’s post.

The Supreme Court dismissed Gilani from office on June 19. He had been convicted in April of contempt for refusing to ask Swiss authorities to reopen corruption cases against President Zardari, who heads the Peoples Party, to which Gilani also belongs.

Gilani argued that Zardari has full immunity as head of state.

Serbian Foreign Minister Wins Top UN Post After Bitter Fight

Serbia’s Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic has won a vote to become the UN General Assembly president after a hard-fought diplomatic tussle with a Lithuanian candidate.

He secured 99 votes in a UN General Assembly election for the post, against 85 for Lithuania’s UN ambassador Dalius Cekuolis.

Jeremic, 36, defeated Cekuolis, who had accused Russia of backing the Serb to punish Lithuania for its stance that annexation by the Soviet Union after World War Two brought the Baltic nation more than four decades of tyranny.

Jeremic will assume the post in September.

The job involves chairing the annual gathering of world leaders in New York in September and other UN events.

Igor Who? Putin Catapults Tank Factory Foreman Into Top Urals Post

MOSCOW — Russian President Vladimir Putin and the Roman Emperor Caligula have a lot in common, begins a popular joke making the rounds in the Sverdolovsk Oblast.

Caligula appointed his horse Incatatus as a senator and Putin has made an obscure tank factory foreman called Igor Kholmanskikh his special envoy to the Urals region, goes the punch line.

Next in line for a top state post is Putin’s black Labrador Koni!, the joke adds for good measure.

Putin’s appointment earlier this month of the 42-year-old Kholmanskikh as the Kremlin’s representative to the economically crucial mining region, which comes with a seat on Russia’s powerful Security Council, has certainly elicited its fair share of snickers and raised more than a few eyebrows.

Konstantin Kiselyov, a Yekaterinburg-based political analyst, has noted that Kholmanskikh is virtually unknown in the region:

“No one remembers him — he’s a nobody,” he said. “He’s completely grey. I spoke to some journalists today and that’s what they think as well. They’re all laughing.”

Sending A Signal

On the surface, the appointment appears to be a reward to the blue-collar voters in the Russian heartland who provided the backbone of Putin’s support in the March presidential elections.

The campaign used Putin’s tough man-of-the-people image to appeal to workers like Kholmanskikh at a time when the urban professional classes were abandoning him in droves — and taking to the streets to demand his ouster.

Kholmanskikh, a foreman at the UralVagonZavod tank factory in Niznhy Tagil, contributed to this narrative in December when, during one of Putin’s live television broadcasts with voters, he offered to travel to Moscow “with the guys” to put an end to mass opposition protests breaking out in the capital

Analysts also say Putin is using the appointment to send a message that he values loyalty above all.

“Putin is demonstrating to everyone — the political elite, the business elite, his own circle — that he scorns and does not wish to consider himself subject to any new laws or norms,” said Sergei Moshkin, another Yekaterinburg-based political analyst.  “For him there are no political traditions. Henceforth, the only decision maker is him — for him this is allowed and it must not be discussed.”

Kholmanskikh was born to factory workers in Nizhny Tagil in 1969 and served in the military as a driving instructor in amphibious tracked tanks in the late 1980s.

x

Kholmanskikh has been lavishly praised by Kremlin-friendly media outlets.

In 1994, he earned a degree in mechanics, specializing in wheel and track vehicles and took a job at the UralVagonZavod, which is named after Felix Dzerzhinsky, the founder of the Soviet Union’s secret police.

He slowly worked his way up the ranks of the plant, where his parents had been employed for more than three decades and which relies entirely on government contracts.

He worked six years as deputy manager of assembly and was finally promoted to chief assembly manager in August of last year.

A Fighter For ‘Stability’

Months later, Kholmanskikh became a household name. In December Putin purred with delight as the factory worker took the microphone on national television amid mass antigovernment protests and told millions of Russians how far he was prepared to fight to protect “stability” — the jewel of Putin’s political lexicon.

Shortly after the broadcast, Kholmanskikh began organizing pro-Putin rallies in the region.

On May 18, Putin repaid that loyalty — and sparked headlines in Russia and beyond — by appointing him special envoy to the Urals Federal District, which includes Sverdlovsk Oblast.

“As a man who has spent his entire life in manufacturing, I consider that you, know how simple people, simple citizens, live and how to use this position properly,” Putin told the mechanic. “You will be able to stand up for the interests of people.”

In taking up the post, Kholmanskikh told the president that he hoped he “would not let anyone down.”

Kremlin-friendly media outlets have since been busy praising Kholmanskikh as, among other things, a “model family man,” an avid sportsman, and “master of checkers.”

Conspiracy Mill

Kholmanskikh’s meteoric rise and the Kremlin’s reputation for manufacturing well-orchestrated political theater has naturally fed the conspiracy mill.

Leonid Volkov, an opposition figure in Sverdlovsk Oblast, said Kholmanskikh’s promotion to foreman last August — just as the Kremlin was forming the All-Russian Popular Front to attract working class support and three months before he spoke out on national television — was suspicious. He has suggested that the whole thing was scripted from the start.

“The idea to use this political tactic clearly came after the idea of the People’s Front,” he said. “The idea to counterpoise hipsters with the real working class was clearly established in the summer and by autumn it was already in action. The whole Kholmanskikh-Putin phone-in was just the realization of this strategy.”

Others, however, have dismissed the conspiracies and maintain that the Kremlin simply saw an opportunity in Kholmanskikh and exploited it.

“This is a man who accidentally found himself at the summit of power during a time of political turmoil,” said Moshkin. “It had nothing to do with him personally — it was that particular type of person who turned out to be needed by the country’s president.”

* Poppy3 Update on Dong – Post By Newmonies Dinar Updates

5:09 PM [poppy3] ok rich friends I am going to give the updated information on the DONG. Here is what I have heard and just confirmed.

THE DONG has been scheduled as we have known for a long time now to RV in the same basket as the DINAR. As of last week they and China met with the IMF and ask to be allowed to RV at anytime on their own and from what we have gathered thus far where granted permission.

China has purchased the majority of the banking system in v/n and they are pushing them to go ahead and RV ….

Now a solid source from V/N BANKING is saying he thinks if IRAQ doesn’t RV THIS WEEK then V/N will proceed and go ahead. This is awesome news as you can imagine.

NOW BEFORE EVERYONE ASK THE RATE IT IS STILL AS IT HAS BEEN RUMORED FOR QUITE A WHILE NOW 2.3CENTS TO A NICKLE. THATS IT RIGHT NOW will update ASAP. poppy3 have a very blessed night. POPPY3

[vic406] daniandquin and you still have a chunk going to dealers

[daniandquin] vic406 That is another good point…. all other outlets for cashin

[daniandquin] I was not basing the numbers per day. That is the total number of appointments per bank

[daniandquin] I was not even going to take a guess at how many Canadians hold Dinar….

[sailman] daniandquin my bank manager says she could only handle about 30 to 40 per day for this type of investment — that is seting up accounte and getting dinar checked and getting Private Bankers set up.

[[daniandquin] But…. If there are 300 million people in the States, and they are guessing at around 1 to 6 million dinar holders, that is about .02% of the popuLATION

[daniandquin] .02% of 30 million is 600000 dinar holders In Canada

[linzb985] Like we say no one really knows the rate date etc but if the belief of a high rate for a short period is true if seems like there could be some hysteria to get cashed in as quickly as possible. I’m sure the banks have thought of this (or hope they have)

[daniandquin] again, all numbers are for reference only

[aemily] daniandquin I think you have one too many zeros

[daniandquin] Now, as per some intel Wells Fargo has offered to be opened 24/7 to accomodate this

aemily] .02% of 30 million

[daniandquin] aemily – I still get 600 thousand

aemily] daniandquin 0k, I agree

[daniandquin] In reality, we won’t know EXACTLY how this will roll out until the RV is live and we have the bank packages in hand

[mollyshelper] Good morning all.. Please forgive my ignorance, but a long time ago it was said that any bank with a foreign currency desk would be exchanging these once “the time” came. Now all we hear about is “The Big 4″ banks and their affiliates. Which way is it?

glazer117] mollyshelper all banks that deal with foreign currency

[glazer117] better deals at big 4

[whitelions] mollyshelper any bank with a fro . cur will exchange BUT what you want to do is call around because depending on how much you have the banks are going to charge you a fee and you want a lower fee tell them your calling around so they will compete for your BIS.

mollyshelper] I would guess that the rate will be fairly close in all banks, but the perks such as wealth manager furnished and special credit.debit cards may be better in the big 4.

glazer117] Terri i dont think it matters about the rush he chances of seeing others with dinar when we cash out r slim

[glazer117] we’re 2% of population spread across the country

[daniandquin] Guys in the end run…. really? does it matter how many hold dinar? YOU hold dinar. that’s all that counts in reality, right?

[daniandquin] and in CAnada it’s a completely different situation as all banks are chartered and , I believe, tha t all the major banks in canada will participate- to the best of my knowledge all CAnadian banks have blacklight machine to check $ 100, so other than training, they should all be able to do onsite verification. * Soonerpatriot’s Encouraging Post – Caps Corner Chat 05/03/2012

12:21 AM [soonerpatriot] Good Evening Folks – I know I’m a poor substitute for Cap, but for now you’re just gonna have to put up with me. Picture this, Cap is on two conference calls and texting on his cell phone. It doesn’t get any more intense than that.

12:21 AM [soonerpatriot] But he has a smile on his face, and that is important to note – a smile 0 ya know that facial expression when you’re happy, that things are progressing in a favorable way, that you’re the early bird who got the worm. Well you get the picture.

12:22 AM [soonerpatriot] Believe it or not, we are making significant progress and while I normally am cautiously optimistic, I’m near throwing caution to the wind.

12:22 AM [soonerpatriot] Notice I’m not talking dates or rates – I can’t do that at this stage of the process. You all are smart enough to know we’re close, really close.

So we don’t need to really discuss that issue. Just put a Cappy smile on your face to know our blessing is near.

12:22 AM [soonerpatriot] The rates – well you’ve heard they’re great and I’m not going to lie about that anymore. They’re not great! I say again, the rates, both IQD and VND RATES ARE NOT GREAT! THEY”RE FANTASTIC and if these puppies don’t put a smile on your face when the rates are released, then you need to be playing wor

12:22 AM [soonerpatriot] …or you’ve never smiled in your life. Knowing the exact date and rate isn’t going to really matter because it is all near and you and I have no impact on when or how much anyway. So don’t expend any critical brain cell. Just smile that Cappy, early-bird smile.

12:22 AM [soonerpatriot] So, we’re all ready to have this over and we’re almost there. You come to this site because you trust Cap and he asked me to say this, trust us now.

Understand that because of the status of the process, we can’t release anything critical, not on the board or via an IM.

12:22 AM [soonerpatriot] Just thank God for the privilege to be a part of this historic event that 200 years from now will likely be in every history book right along our country’s independence and other world changing events.

2:23 AM [soonerpatriot] Take this time to review your plans, your lists of people you already know who will receive your blessings from this, and look for ways you can safely and most effectively give to those in need.

Also look for investment opportunities that will allow you to replenish this blessing and make it perpetu

12:23 AM [soonerpatriot] I can’t take Q & A cuz Cap says I’m radioactive. Both of us are so dang honest, the PTB are afraid we’ll spill all the beans.

So I can’t do that or take IM’s, but hope you’ll put that smile on your face and just enjoy the moment knowing all is well and all will soon be better than well.

12:23 AM [soonerpatriot] God Bless and remember to pay it backward and forward!

12:23 AM [soonerpatriot] End of Post God Bless All of YOU! You’re the best!

Posted on May 2, 2012 by BGG  http://www.dinarupdates.com/blog/

Hello Updaters!! Today we’ve got a NEWS FLOOD,  another *** Flashback *** …..We’ve got a lot of good *** Current News *** to comment on…a few *** Rumor Comments *** and some interesting *** Chat Comments *** at the end. I hope you like the new Blog – BGG

*** Flashback ***

Today’s Flashback goes back about a month. President Barzani was on a trip to the US then headed to Bulgaria and on to Hungary. I was thinking to myself this seemed like a very strange intinerary. During his stay here in the US word started trickling out that Maliki was being criticized for listening to arguments in his Council of Ministers about potential direct action against the Kurds. This was not widely reported – then another report emerged (a few days later) that several of Maliki’s advisors plainly said “give us three days and we’ll wipe them out”. To which Maliki is alleged to have said “wait till the F-16′s arrive”. In retrospect – one of the highlights of US trip for Barzani was to protest the delivery of these F-16 aircraft (scheduled for the fall of this year) to Baghdad under the current regime.

Once I heard the initial report about some discussion in the Council of Ministers regarding direct action against the Kurds and Maliki had not immediately put an end to it…I started thinking – “if I were the leader of a embattled, semi-autonomous, oil-rich province and I were facing direct military action, what would I do”? Then I understood Barzani’s intinerary. I wrote about this quite a bit back then – sometimes “tongue in cheek” about heading up to a couple of former Eastern Bloc countries and trading some heating oil for a few dozen “slightly used” MiGs and T-72 main battle tanks – they have those things stacked 3 high just sitting there in storage!! They might not be M1a1′s and F-16′s but at least they would have something to fight with.

Picture

Here’s an example of the type of armour they can get their hands on at pretty much “rock bottom” post-Cold War prices “The new Iraqi Government acquired dozens of refitted T-72M1s from Hungary, in order to equip an armored brigade (this was only a couple of years ago – Baghdad). The training and experience of the old Iraqi Army officers and crews with the T-72 was also one of the reasons behind this choice of tanks”. They could defend with these.

Picture

Here was a listing for late model, operable MiG’s. I had imagined Barzani getting his hands on some older technology (there’s quite a bit of that to be had) but look at this!! “Those in the market for a used, fourth-generation, Soviet, air-superiority jet fighter need look no further than Hungary. The Central European country is putting up eight of its 24 remaining MiG-29 Fulcrums for tender. The Hungarian government has declared a minimum bid for the package of fighters at no less than $ 18.3 million USD”. Those things are crazy fast and really high-tech!! I bet there is some oil-for-? deal to be made here

Again – no one believed me, I was crazy, that’s not gonna’ happen…on and on. I thought – well, maybe I did get out over the edge a little there? Who knows? Lo and behold an article comes out about a week ago (almost 2 weeks after I called it) where Baghdad (the Federal Government) was protesting Kurdistan’s right to purchase weapons independent of the central government – particularly a sale of 300 T-72 main battle tanks from Russia. Barzani went way going past what I had imagined!! Whoa!! 300?!? I guess my thinking wasn’t that far off – huh?!?  I doubt this sale will go through (as I recall) but Barzani may not be done shopping. Further, I’m sure some of this was “brinkmanship”.

Iraq’s political crisis is heading towards calm and the solution

Erbil / May (Rn) – The Iraqi deputy prime minister, said Tuesday that efforts will continue to hold the national meeting with the participation of all political leaders to resolve the current political crisis in the country, adding that the crisis is heading towards calm and the solution.  This one is pretty self-explainatory – it’s good for us. Calm  solutions!! http://www.aknews.com/ar/aknews/4/304705/

Our Dinar Update May 1stPosted on May 1, 2012 by BGG  at: http://www.dinarupdates.com/blog/

*** Flashback ***

Why are we so caught up in the politics of Iraq?? Well – there’s not a perfectly simple answer to that question, but me let try to make it as easy as I can. Through various articles, speeches and several direct contacts – Dr. Shabibi (the Governor of the CBI) has given us some fairly good indications as to what his intentions are for the currency situation in Iraq. It is highly unlikely he will not execute a significant change in the value of the IQD prior to several primary issues being handled. First, the three remaining Ministers need to be fully seated and announced – not run “by proxy” with Maliki at the helm. That is where we are now with the Ministers…

Read More Link on Right

These Ministries are of utmost importance because they are the Ministers of Defense, Security and Interior. Imagine for a moment, if one person controlled all of the military, police forces and intelligence agencies (just for starters!!) here in the US. That would be a very big problem for democracy in general. Well, that is exactly what is going on in Iraq. Maliki has one “loyalist” in a Ministry position and he’s running the other two “by proxy” (essentially – by himself).

The next issue is the full Erbil Agreement must be implemented – this is basically the agreement that got Maliki his job. He, Talibani, Barzani and Allawi (with support from Sadr) all got together in Erbil a little over a year ago and came up with a “power sharing agreement” that allowed Maliki the PMship even though he wasn’t the majority vote winner. He got his end and he’s held up the rest of the deal – no one else gets theirs. His MO has been a masterful set of stall tactics – which have worked well until just lately.

The final item, and most important to the Kurds is the implentation of article 140 (which is already part of their constitution) and it’s application relative to “disputed territories” – basically how they get treated as a “semi-autonomous” government and how oil revenues will be apportioned. On this point Maliki has stalled as well under the auspices of his strong “Nationalistic views”. It’s really just a big power grab.

Once these items are handled Dr Shabibi will be free to execute an effective plan for the currency. However, until then he has almost no choice but to wait (much like us). If he were to RV the currency prior to a true “power sharing” government being in place he would be basically giving the money and far more power over to Maliki. The fear is Maliki would immediately arm Iraq forces and head directly for Kurdistan (we’ll talk more on this tomorrow as well). Maliki’s dictatorial tendancies have more than proven Dr Shabibi’s model over and over. He’s done the right thing.

*** Current News *** (I’ll update throughout the day)

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region — Several of Iraq’s key leaders have given Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki a 15-day ultimatum to deliver on a previous power-sharing agreement that was reached in 2010, Rudaw has learned.

The ultimatum came during a meeting of leaders of some of Iraq’s largest political factions in Erbil.

Iraq’s President Jalal Talabani, Kurdish President Massoud Barzani, Muqtada Sadr, the leader of the powerful Shia Sadrist Current, Iraqi Parliamentary Speaker Osama al-Nujaifi and former PM Ayad Allawi attended the meeting on Saturday. “Informed sources told Rudaw that the United States and Iran have voiced their support for the (15 day) ultimatum.”

http://www.rudaw.net/english/news/iraq/4683.html

This is one of the most amazing articles I have seen during this whole thing. It really highlights the strength of the alliance forming against Maliki. Which is just great – but even more odd is the US and Iran landing on the same side on ANYTHING. It really says something about how bad off things are when these two agree that you are a bad guy!!
